Acknowledging NIH Support of NUCATS UM1, K12 and T32 Awards
NUCATS is funded in part by a Clinical & Translational Science Award (CTSA) grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH): UM1TR005121 (effective September 1, 2024; formerly UL1TR001422). A K12 program for faculty and a T32 program for postdoctoral trainees are also linked to the NUCATS UM1 award.
These guidelines align with the NIH’s expectation that acknowledging federal support improves public understanding of biomedical research and its impact on human health.
When to Acknowledge NIH Awards
According to NIH guidance, an award should be acknowledged only when activities contributing to the publication:
- Directly arise from the award, and
- Fall within the scope of the award.
Consider citing NIH support if:
- Award-supported personnel or effort contributed to the publication.
- Experiments, analyses, or data included in the publication were conducted or generated as a result of the award.
- The published work has a clear and direct connection to the aims of the grant.
If any of these are true, the appropriate NIH award must be cited.
Individuals Required to Cite NUCATS NIH Awards:
The following individuals must cite NUCATS support in accordance with NIH guidance:
UM1-Supported Faculty
- Faculty whose effort is supported by the UM1 to execute initiatives proposed in the UM1 application (or subsequent amendments).
- Faculty directly funded via UM1 mechanisms, including all manuscripts resulting from Translational Science Pilots or Translational Science Research Projects.
K12 Scholars and T32 Trainees
- K12 scholars and T32 trainees must cite NIH support in all manuscripts resulting from work conducted while funded by the CTSA, as well as and any subsequent publications that arise directly from their K or T research activities.
Use the appropriate citation below based on the date and funding mechanism.

NIH Public Access Policy
Federal law requires that all published peer-reviewed manuscripts funded at least in part by the NIH be deposited in PubMed Central. Work with the publishing journal to ensure timely submission through the NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS). For additional guidance, see Galter Library’s resource on NIH Public Access Policy.
Acknowledging NU / FSM Support for NUCATS Non-NIH Funded Resources
Some NUCATS resources are supported by Northwestern University or Feinberg School of Medicine (FSM), rather than by NIH grant awards. These include:
- NM Clinical Research Unit
- Center for Clinical Research Finance and Regulatory Units
- NUCATS-NICO Seed Funding Competition
For work supported by these resources, use the following acknowledgement:
"Services were provided by the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences (NUCATS) Institute; NIH awards to the Institute did not provide direct funding for this project.”
For work supported by Galter Library services or resources, or use of the Prism repository, please use the following acknowledgement or contact library director, Kristi Holmes, with questions:
“Services were provided by the Galter Health Sciences Library and Learning Center; NIH awards did not provide direct funding for this project.”
