Luo Recognized as ACMI Fellow
Yuan Luo, PhD, chief AI officer at the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Sciences (NUCATS) Institute and at the Institute of Augmented Intelligence in Medicine (I.AIM), has been named a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI).
ACMI Fellows are elected for demonstrations of leadership, stellar experience, and established scholarship. They are considered among the best and brightest stars in the field of medical informatics.
“Being inducted as an ACMI Fellow is deeply significant and fills me with immense pride. It stands as a benchmark of excellence that covers academia, government, and industry,” says Luo, assistant professor of Preventive Medicine in the Division of Health and Biomedical Informatics, Pediatrics, and Engineering. “ACMI Fellows are recognized leaders in our field, with unparalleled expertise, a history of noteworthy contributions, and a robust foundation of scholarly work.”
Luo, who is also director of the I.AIM Center for Collaborative AI in Healthcare, will be inducted November 12 during the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) 2023 Annual Symposium. Collectively, the incoming class of Fellows have made significant contributions to the realms of biomedicine and healthcare while serving as a source of information, education, and inspiration for the informatics community.
Luo's innovative approach to medical informatics has led to the development of a seminal suite of artificial intelligence (AI) methods, which have been applied in diverse settings, including clinical narratives, disease gene pathways, medical imaging, and predictive modeling with structured clinical data. As a passionate proponent of a paradigm shift from reactive to proactive AI and machine learning (ML), Luo's vision extends to leveraging the new paradigm to automate continuous improvement and drive the model-design-experiment feedback loop. This vision guides the evolution of AI/ML solutions in complex territories such as drug discovery and highly dynamic situations such as pandemic, positioning Luo as a leading figure in the field.
“This is a huge honor and incredible recognition of Yuan’s leadership in the field of informatics and data science,” says Kristi Holmes, PhD, Galter Health Sciences Library director and Associate Dean for Knowledge Management and Strategy. “This honor is particularly significant given Yuan’s cutting-edge research methods, collaborative innovation, and meteoric impact on health research at Northwestern and far beyond.”
Luo's work focuses on understanding complex diseases and informing targeted therapies. His groundbreaking research has been featured in leading journals, including JAMA, Nature Medicine, and Nature Biotechnology.
ACMI is an honorary College of elected Informatics Fellows from the United States and abroad who have made significant and sustained contributions to the field of medical informatics and who have met rigorous scholarly scrutiny by their peers. Incorporated in 1984, ACMI dissolved its separate corporate status to merge with the American Association for Medical Systems and Informatics (AAMSI) and the Symposium on Computer Applications in Medical Care (SCAMC), when AMIA was formed in 1989. The College now exists as an entity within AMIA, with its own bylaws and regulations.
The NUCATS is supported in part by the National Institutes of Health's National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, Grant Number UL1TR001422.
